Question   Infrared camera conversion
Years ago I use to love shooting infrared and then hand coloring with Marshall's Photo Oils. Your work has reinspired me to explore digitally what I use to do. I want to convert my Nikon D70 and explored the Lifepix site through your link. My question to you -- as the expert/inspriational guru -- would your recommend the black and white or color conversions for the camera?

Thank you so much for your time. Thank you also for sharing your beautiful work. It's inspiring.

- Barbara J. Cochran 11/4/2010 8:19:55 AM

Answer Barbara, thank you for your kind words about my infrared work. I have a conversion that allows color, however I desaturate in Photoshop to create a sepia tone. The advantage of color is you can create blue sky effects and other effects in Photoshop. However, if the only thing you want to do is hand color to put your own color in, then the black and white might be the simpler choice, especially if you don't use Photoshop much. And thank you for going through my link for purchasing. I really appreciate that.

Answer Barbara, you might want to come to my Hawaii 7 day Women's Photography Retreat February 26-March 5, which includes infrared. I also have an infrared workshop this summer in Montana from July 10-15. See my workshop schedule in the Workshops, Courses tab of this website, and sign up for my email newsletter on the home page.

Question   Infrared Photography
Kathleen,
I have loved your emulsion/image transfers, but your infrared photography is absolutely gorgeous. Wish I were able to take a class there in Hawaii, but unable to at this point in time, maybe sometime in the future. In the meantime, I will continue to enjoy your photo's!!!

- Linda St Angelo 10/5/2009 9:08:55 AM

Answer Hi Linda, thank you for your kind words about my infrared images. I wanted to let you know that I am teaching a 5-day Digital Infrared Photography workshop in Montana July 10-15, 2011. I hope that is easier for you to get to than Hawaii. Contact www.workshopsinmt.com.
Aloha, Kathy

PS I had technical difficulties responding before, but hope it goes through this time.

Question   Fuji Transfers
Hi Kathleen,

You do such beautiful work and I have been inspired by your Polaroid lifts and transfers. I have two of your books and learned how to do lifts and transfer by your them. Do you still do image transfers and lifts and if so will you be posting any recent Fuji works?

- Christina Emery 7/10/2009 4:46:25 PM

  Answer Hi Christina,

Thank you for the compliments on my work. I am so glad that you were helped by my books. I don't do many transfers these days because I am so passionate about infrared. However, I do still teach Polaroid and Fuji transfers. I probably won't post Fuji transfers to the website, at least for a while (although this could change!).

I'll add you to my newsletter mailing list if you aren't already on it.

Question   Love your site!
I came upon your website through better photo.com. I am just getting into photography as a student at the age of 50. I had to write to tell you how inspiring and amazing your site/photos are. Our family comes to the Big Island for our vacation yearly. We always go out snorkeling with the dolphins ( Local xtreme adventure- casey cho) and found your dolphin photo's heartwarming. I'd love to be a student of yours! I'll be in touch in October of 2010 our next trip ! I'm signing up for your newsletters.
Thanks for your inspiration.

Answer Thank you, Mary! I've just put the site up so will be adding many more dolphin and whale (and other) images soon.

Definitely get in touch with me before you come back to the Big Island. We can set up a private session, photo tour, or even a swim with the dolphins.

Aloha, Kathleen
